SPRINGVILLE—With Thanksgiving in the rearview mirror and Christmas just about three weeks away, families across Western New York are beginning to decorate for the upcoming holiday. And with that, of course, comes the time-honored tradition of picking out a Christmas tree.
Though the exact origin of the tradition is up for debate, it's often attributed to the pagans and Christians as a way to celebrate the winter solstice. According to WhyChristmas.com, the pagans used branches to decorate their home for the solstice as it made them think of spring, while Christians used trees as a sign of everlasting life with God.
The popularity of stringing lights on the tree became well-known in America in 1895, when President Grover Cleveland had the White House tree lit at the request of his daughters. President Calvin Coolidge began the tradition of the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn in 1923.
Of course, before getting to the decorating part, you have to first get a tree. Within a few minutes drives, there are a multitude of tree farms that offer precut and you-cut trees, along with other holiday needs. Following are a sampling or local tree farms.
