WVCS looks to start community outreach program

WEST VALLEY—The West Valley Central School Board of Education gave the go-ahead for the start of a new community outreach program during its meeting Aug. 27.

School Psychologist Antoinette Leonard and Guidance Counselor Matt LaBrake have started the process for a community outreach program, CORP.

The program would provide a place at the school for parents and families to “facilitate communication between families and the school, provide opportunities for parents to get to know each other and network, offer educational and socializing opportunities, serve various needs of families so parents and other adults can turn their attention to helping support their children and provide parents and families with a platform to express their needs and gain information on resources for mental health, academic support, child care services and in-home resources and services.”

“Some other districts have gone this way in the past,” Superintendent Eric Lawton said. “It looks like it going to benefit both our families and our kids … I think it is a wonderful program.”

The program would offer monthly meetings and trainings after school, create a resource list to provide parents with useful information, use surveys to determine the needs of the community, partner with community-based programs and develop a resource team to work together and achieve its goals. After each meeting or training, CORP would provide tests to help determine if it was worthwhile and which programs are most beneficial so they can adapt the program to meet its needs.

To help get the program started, CORP will be sending out donation letters to businesses to help with funding and conduct toy, clothing and food drives to help meet the needs of the program and families.
