WEST VALLEY—The West Valley Central School Board of Education approved the purchase of new desks and chairs for classrooms at its meeting Aug. 7.
WVCS Principal Dan Amodeo displayed some of the current furniture throughout the school and talked about the need for new desks and chairs. Amodeo said many of the chairs and desks are nearly 30 years old – with many having broken pieces and have been repaired – and if the school needed to replace furniture, there is not much extra currently within the building.
“We are spending a lot of time and effort throughout the school year and summer replacing desks and seeing what desks and chairs we can use and salvage,” Amodeo said. “We are not uniform and our learning spaces can use an update and more appeal to our students, our staff and our community.”
For the elementary school, Amodeo said they are planning on purchasing trapezoid-shaped desks with a book box attached underneath. For Pre-K classrooms, the desks will be similar in shape to the ones in the elementary school, but smaller. For high school classrooms, the school is looking at rectangular desks similar to what they currently have, but with a larger surface area. Amodeo said because most of the students use laptops within the school, they are also planning on replacing the computer workstations in the library with tables to be used as STEM stations.
“Updating our furniture adds more appeal to our school, adds to our sense of pride and respect and positive attitude about our school and is a safe and conducive work environment,” Amodeo said.
Amodeo gave the board options to discuss and choose from when it came to buying the furniture, including not buying any furniture and using what they have, purchasing furniture for the elementary or high school one year and buying the other next year or buying all of the furniture at once.
After discussion, the board decided to make the entire purchase of $93,178.65 at once, but the chief concern among board members was the high cost of receiving and assembly, which comes out to around $14,000. While the assembly cost is optional for the purchase, Amodeo said he will be talking with the supplier soon and will see if they are able to go down on their price.
WVCS Superintendent Eric Lawton updated the board in his report about the summer cleaning and preparations for the start of the school year. Recent cleaning and work throughout the school has included cleaning the auditorium floor and hallways, painting of rooms in the bus garage and the faculty room, lawn maintenance and removing and replacing the old mulch at the playground.
In other news the board:
– Appointed Julie Baren to a probationary period for the position of 1.0 FTE Special Education teacher.
– Approved the resignation of Carleen Conrad from the special education teacher position.
– Awarded the food service contract to Personal Touch Food Service Inc.
The next West Valley Central School Board of Education meeting will be held on Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. in the library conference room.
