George E. DeWald

George E. DeWald, 87, of Springville, passed away October 19, 2017 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital.

George was born on June 21, 1930 to the late George C. and Agnes DeWald. He graduated from Kensington High School and worked for his father at DeWald Florist in Buffalo. George enlisted in the U.S. Navy, was stationed in Hawaii and was assigned to the USS Bexar. He was honorably discharged after serving during the Korean War.

He and his beloved wife Carol moved to Colden in 1955 where he was a member of the Colden  Volunteer Fire Company with over 30 years of service. He was a heavy equipment operator and was a proud lifetime member of Local 17 IUOE. The couple relocated to Florida in 1986 and then to Sheridan in 1991, where they operated G&G Country Store. They retired to Springville in 1997 and were active members of St. Aloysius Catholic Church.

In addition to his wife of 60 years, who passed away on Dec. 12, 2012, and his parents, George was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law Linda DeWald and brother-in-law William Shelley.

George is survived by his children Diane (Bruce) Bookhagen, Kim (Paul) Fisher, George W. (Joyce), Michael, Mary (Robert) Mayerat, Daniel (Geneva) and Alberta (Michael) Sulik; 10 grandchildren, 10 step-grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, sister Shirley Shelley and many loving nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held from St. Aloysius Church in Springville. Expressions of sympathy may be made to Love INC of Springville.
