Helen R. Shearer

Helen R. Shearer, 95, of Springville, passed away peacefully on January 2, 2018 at Bertrand Chaffee Hospital.


Helen was born in Ligonier, Pa. on Jan. 18,1922, a daughter of the late Allyn K. and Elsie S. (nee Scott) Renwick. She obtained a Master’s Degree from the University of Rochester Eastman School of Music.

Helen worked as a payroll clerk for Bertrand Chaffee Hospital and was instrumental in establishing the Bertrand Chaffee Hospital Retirees Association in Springville, as well as being a bookkeeper and computer data processor for Concord Medical in Springville. She was a member of the First United Methodist Church, where she served as the church’s librarian. She was also a member of the Monday Club.

With her friends, Helen enjoyed two wonderful trips to Europe. Her faith was very important to her and she also enjoyed her home and gardening.

In addition to her parents, Helen was preceded in death by her husband James R. Shearer; two step-children Shirley and Wallace Woodworth and four sisters and a brother.

Helen is survived by a daughter, Mary (Steven) Dyviniak; her extended family Harold (Myrna) Woodworth, Donald (June) Shearer, Irene Lockwood and Betsy Shearer; two grandchildren Christie (Wes) Welsby and Mill (Jill) Lockwood and four great-grandchildren Annie, Madeleine, Owen and Jacob, who referred to her as “GG.”

A funeral service will be held at a later date in the spring.
