Kenton L. “Kent” Hoppel, 65, of West Valley, passed away September 4, 2018 at Mat-Su Regional Medical Center, Palmer, Alaska.
Kent was born in Lowville on March 18, 1953 to the late Kenneth and Arletha (nee Stiles) Hoppel. He was a graduate of Beaver River Central School and received an Associate’s Degree in communications from Alfred State College.
Kent was employed by Springville-Griffith Institute and Central School District as an audio-visual technician from 1975 until his retirement in 2008. He coached several sports in his early years at S-GI and enjoyed many years of working on the high school musicals.
Kent was an active member of the West Valley Volunteer Hose Co. for nearly four decades; was awarded Fireman of the Year in 2002 and was president in 2012. Kent was a dedicated EMT for over 35 years as well as a member of the New York State Volunteer Fire Police Association. He was recognized by the Cattaraugus County Volunteer Firefighter Association and the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen of New York State for his years of service.
He was often found assisting in the audio-visual needs throughout the communities of Springville and West Valley, including the Children’s League. Kent enjoyed volunteer service for the Future Farmers of America and the Boy Scouts of America as well.
Kent was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in West Valley. His hobbies included spending time with his grandsons, traveling, fishing, woodworking and antique cars.
Kent is survived by his wife Rhonda; a daughter Krista (Brad) Frank of West Valley; a son Adam (Molly) Hoppel of Hornell; two grandsons Henry and Jacob Frank; siblings Nancy Brown of Lowville, Kay Manzer of Castorland, Rayta (James) Russell of Lowville, Wayne (Ellen) Hoppel of Castorland, Vanessa (Michael) Monnat of Castorland and several nieces and nephews.
Friends may call Tuesday, Sept. 18 from 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. at the Smith-Weismantel Funeral Home, 271 E. Main St., Springville. A celebration of Kent’s life will be Wednesday, Sept. 19 in the West Valley Memorial Fire Hall, 9091 Route 240, West Valley, at 4 p.m. There will also be a memorial service on Saturday, Sept. 22 at 1 p.m. in the Beaver Valley United Methodist Church in Naumberg.
