Susan Witter Covello

Susan Witter Covello, 83, passed away from natural causes on July 22, 2018, at Good Samaritan Hospital, in Suffern. Susan was born in Buffalo to the late Nelson and Carol Witter. She graduated from Griffith Institute in Springville in 1953.


Susie was a piano teacher in Rockland County and Northern New Jersey for 40 years. She served as a member of the Rockland County Music Teachers Guild. In her community, she served on the Clarkstown Parks Board and Recreation Commission, the Rockland County Environmental Management Council and volunteered to promote the construction of Central Nyack Community Center.

Her work for the Central Nyack Self-Help Organization provided scholarship grants to the United Negro College Fund for Nyack High School graduates continuing to college. She was instrumental in creating the legislation that established Buttermilk Falls as parkland for permanent public enjoyment.

Susie was also a radio DJ, loved jazz, flew airplanes and returned to college at age 71 to complete her Associate’s Degree in Communications at Rockland Community College.

Susie is survived by her daughter Julie Covello; her son Stephen Covello III; two grandchildren Gianna and Nico and her brother David W. Witter.
