Annual Tri-County Trout Derby this weekend

ARCADE—April 1 marks the beginning of fishing season here in Western New York, but with cold temperatures and snowfall throughout the first week in April, there hasn’t been a whole lot of fishing going on.

This weekend will be different as warmer weather is in sight and cash prizes valued at over $10,000 are up for grabs during Arcade Area Chamber of Commerce’s Fourth Annual Tri-County Trout Derby. More than 300 fishermen from all over WNY and northern Pennsylvania will make their way to our area for a weekend of fishing.

The Chamber will be releasing 400-tagged rainbow trout into a 9-mile stretch of Cattaraugus Creek that flows through Wyoming, Cattaraugus and Erie counties. Each trout will be tagged with a number from 1-400; each tag has a cash prize associated with it valued between $25 - 1,000, all of which have been sponsored by local businesses.

Over 100 local businesses are involved in the event this year – from sponsoring a fish, volunteering at the Derby and offering deals and specials to fishermen.

“We appreciate how the whole community supports and welcomes the fishermen to our beautiful town,” said Ben Halsey, AACC president. “It is a great way to showcase the history, attractions, good food and kind people in our area. ”

Theo’s Family Restaurant on West Main Street will be opening early at 5 a.m. to accommodate fishermen for breakfast, the Arcade United Church of Christ, Cong. will serve Trout Derby Chowder on Saturday and a food truck will be at the Arcade Fire Hall, 145 North Street, on Sunday for lunch and afternoon goodies.

To participate and to be eligible for the cash prizes, you must be registered for the event and abide by the Derby and DEC rules. You can learn more and register online at or call the Chamber at 585-492-2114. You can also register in person at Derby Headquarters at the Arcade Fire Hall starting at 5 a.m. on Saturday, April 14 and 5 a.m. on Sunday, April 15.

Registration is $30 for adults and $20 for children under 12.
