Boys tennis team drops two

EAST AURORA—Springville’s boys tennis team had a week of losses to Iroquois (3-2) May 9 and East Aurora (5-0) on May 11.

Only the Griffin doubles pairs against Iroquois recorded wins with both coming in straight sets. Wyatt Cudney and Matt Sion bested Jacob Rowland and Owen Szeglowski, 6-0 and 6-3 in first doubles. In second doubles it was Wyatt Fuller and Nate Myers taking down Dylan Schiffhauer and James Tokasz by 6-2 and 6-4.


All three singles players lost to Iroquois with Zach Hughey having the best showing after he lost to Iroquois’ Dillion Trout by a pair of 6-3 scores at third singles. Michael Spagnola dropped a pair of sets to James McElhinny at 6-2 and 6-1 in first singles, while Maxx Solly lost by 6-0 and 6-2 scores to Dan Baker at second singles.

Against East Aurora, Spagnola lost to Anthony Markello by a pair of 6-2 sets at first singles. Solly lost a pair of 6-0 sets to Jack Gurbacki at second singles, and Michael Place had the best showing in singles play for Springville with losses by 6-3 and 6-2 to Jack Meyer at third singles.

Fuller and Myers dropped their second doubles match to Randy Gacioch and Dan Sterba by 6-1 and 6-4 in second doubles, while Cudney and Sion lost 6-2 and 6-1 in first doubles to Mark Chang and Jake Sigeti at first doubles.

Myers, Fuller and Place all saw their first action of the season as Springville hopes to regroup in finishing out the regular season. The Griffins have just a doubleheader left against Maryvale on May 17 that combines the rainout from May 12. The East Aurora match from May 15 could be rescheduled.
