Co-sponsors sought by Boys & Girls Club for new softball tournament

SPRINGVILLE—The Boys and Girls Club of Springville announced its inaugural barbeque fest and softball tournament to take place Saturday, Aug. 12 at Concord Community Park.

“We’re trying something new to try and recruit more teams. We thought the summer time might be more appealing and by throwing in the barbeque fest, we might be able to get more teams,” Director Andy Bobseine said.

The new idea combines recreation with a cookout to allow more participation for the community to support the Boys and Girls Club. Bobseine is looking to recruit between five and 10 new sponsors with a full sponsored team costing $1,000 or a co-sponsorship at $500 to bring the tournament team total to 12.

Currently, there are seven business teams committed that include Emerling Dealerships, Julie's Pizzeria and Restaurant, CHBWV - Decommissioning Team, Certified Radon Systems, Bertrand Chaffee Hospital, B&B Homes and Cobham LLC.

Bobseine said his group of current sponsors has been tremendous to the Boys & Girls Club, but the director also realizes that the $1,000 entry fee might be too steep for some businesses, so the idea to co-sponsor came about where two businesses can split the cost.

“We’re really looking for some businesses to step up and sponsor either a half- or full-team. We’ve had businesses split teams in the past and we hope more will come forward for the kids,” Bobseine added.

The Club director is also seeking more player participation and says any individual or group is welcome to participate in the softball tournament with every effort made to place them on new or existing team.

While the co-ed, slow-pitch affair usually registers adults 18-years-old and above, Bobseine noted the lone exception to the registration requirement is high school senior status.

Tickets for the event are $10 and will have three notable barbeques by Jake and the Fatman, Rebel Yell and Babz. All three of the barbeque vendors will be selling their award-winning items from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event was conceived to help supplement revenues lost by past winter events that had been cancelled or postponed due to weather. The softball tournament begins at 9 a.m. and first pitch is slated for 10 a.m.

Anyone interested in getting a team registered for the tournament or registering as an individual should contact Bobseine at 829-9785.
