JAMESTOWN—The Springville-Griffith Institute boys track team competed in four events at the New York State Public High Schools Athletic Association’s Section VI Division II Track and Field Championships at Strider Field in Jamestown June 2-3.
Topher Elkins and Nick Abdo continued their success in dash competition by finishing third and fourth in 400 meter, respectively.
The dynamic duo teamed with Jared Reese and Kurt Uschold for a sixth-place finish in the 4x400 relay, while Abdo also had an 11th-place showing in the 100 meter dash to round out the Springville boys team’s participation in Jamestown.
“I could not be more proud of them,” head coach Joe Marvin said. “The competition between [Abdo] and [Elkins] is awesome. They are two of the fastest athletes I have coached in my 20-year career and it's going to be fun to watch them compete against one another again next year in both indoor and outdoor track.”
The 4x400 relay was the fastest S-GI has seen in Marvin’s 16 year tenure.
“They were close to breaking a 40-year-old record, and I feel pretty confident next year it will fall,” Marvin said. “Overall, we had a great group of kids and I had a blast coaching them.”
Although the four boys who competed in the sectionals did extremely well, none won or were runner-up eligible to move on to state competition this weekend June 9-10 in Binghamton.
