HAMBURG—The Springville-Griffith Institute boys track team recorded four top-10 finishes at the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Championships to finish 18th overall in a field of 27 at Howe Field at Hamburg High School May 26-27.
Topher Elkins and Jared Reese accounted for the majority of the team’s top-10 success. Elkins finished seventh in the 400-meter dash and 10th in the 200-meter dash, while Reese was ninth in the high jump. Both Elkins and Reese were also part of the team’s eighth-place finish in the 4 X 400 relay with teammates Kurt Uschold and Nick Abdo.
Head Coach Joe Marvin was elated with many of his team’s individual and group performances especially with the eighth-place relay finish.
“The 4 X 400 ran the best time I have had in my 16 years here at Springville at a 3:38.45. This was in large part to Jared Reese and Kurt Uschold's strong performances to go along with Nick [Abdo] and Topher [Elkins],” Marvin said. “Elkins and Abdo continued their great seasons with strong performances in the 100 and 400 for Nick, and the 200 and 400 for Topher, making finals in both. Freshman Brett Russell finished the year on a great note breaking five minutes in the mile with a 4:58.09 time. Brett is one of only three freshmen in Western New York to accomplish this at the ECIC meet.”
The Griffins had an additional three finishes in the top-20 starting with Abdo in the 400-meter dash, where he finished four spots below Elkins in 11th-place. Uschold took 16th in the 400-meter hurdles and was the team’s lead-off man in the 4 X 800 relay, where Springville finished 19th. In addition to Uschold, the relay team was comprised of Nate Myers, Brett Russell and Zach Peterman. The latter three also finished in positions 23 through 36 in various other events.
Myers finished 23rd in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Russell was 33rd in the 1,600-meter run and Peterman finished 36th in the 3,200-meter run.
In addition to Reese’s top-10 finish in the discus throw, Springville had three other athletes compete in the finals of four other field events.
Of those three, Jackson Richert had the highest finish at 23 in the triple jump and also had a 31st finish in the long jump. Alex Francisco finished 41st in the shot put and 33rd in the discus throw. Not far behind Francisco in the discus throw was Ethan Keyser with a 35th-place finish.
Overall, 10 members of the boys team participated in final events during the ECIC’s two-day event. Four of those will be competing this weekend at the Section VI Championships at Jamestown June 2-3 with Elkins and Abdo in three events each.
Elkins will compete in the 200 and 400-meter dashes, while Abdo will compete in the 100 and 400-meter dashes. The pair will also compete in the 4 X 400-meter relay with Uschold and Reese.
