Kelsey Zabawa is awarded ‘Character of the Game’

SPRINGVILLE—Kelsey Zabawa was named the Section 6 Character of the Game for the Springville-Griffith Institute basketball team in a loss to Lake Shore Jan. 8.

The award is given to one player from each team who reflects strong character, hustle, sportsmanship and positive communication, among other traits. Coach Bob Gainey called the award a “well-deserved honor” for Zabawa.

On the court, the team dropped the game 65-26. Dealing with pressure in the backcourt, the Griffins made some turnovers which led to Lake Shore points. Scorers on the night included Grace Zabawa, six points; Mackenzie Engel, six points; Leah Frank, four points; Ivette Lewandowski, five points; Kelsey Zabawa, three points and Ryan Stedman with two points.

The girls faced Maryvale Jan. 4, opening their league play with a 48-33 loss. Jess Engel had some notable plays, but the team couldn’t hit their stride, Gainey said.

The team is 3-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. They will host Iroquois on Thursday, Jan. 11.
