SPRINGVILLE—The Springville Griffins JV football team bounced back Oct. 18 from an ugly 39-6 defeat at Olean a few days prior and ended their 2017 season with a 24-14 victory over Tonawanda. The win bumped the Griffs record to 2-7.
Nick Emmick opened the scoring with a 16 yard touchdown run on the Griffs opening possession. Tonawanda responded after a Springville fumble to take the lead in the second quarter but the Griffs put together another scoring drive keyed by the passing game. AJ Slippy caught a 26 yard touchdown pass from Emmick as Springville retook the lead at 12-8. Emmick was a perfect 5 for 5 passing on the night with four completions coming Slippy's way. Eric Pruitt hauled in the other reception as the Griffs totaled 85 yards through the air. Pruitt had his first interception of the season while Trevor Maracle had a sack and Marc Meissner added a forced fumble for the Springville defense in the opening half
Springville had the ball just twice in the second half but both drives ended in Griffin scores. Quenten Leicht scored on a seven yard run to extend the lead to 18-8 in the third quarter. Tonawanda responded with a touchdown of their own but the Griffs ended up driving the length of the field to seal the game. Alex Elkins scored on a two yard run with less than a minute left and then intercepted the final Tonawanda pass attempt of the game as the Griffins ended their season on a high note.
