S-GI JV football opens season with a win and a loss

SPRINGVILLE—The Springville JV Griffins opened its season on Sept. 4 with an 8 - 6 victory over the Franklinville-Ellicottville Titans on Pop Warner Field.

AJ Slippy scored the lone touchdown for the Griffs on a 65 yard reception from Tom Orndorff. Cole Baker caught what proved to be the winning conversion from Orndorff following the score. With the Griffs up 8 - 0, a turnover on a muffed punt set up the Titans for their only score of the game. After a penalty brought back a successful two-point play, Slippy made a solid tackle to keep the Titans out of the endzone on the retry. The Griffins defense played well staying on the field for a majority of the game. Baker led the way with an interception and a fumble recovery. Eric Pruitt led the team with six tackles; sacks were recorded by Zach Scime and Rhett Butzer.

On Sept. 8, the Griffins traveled to Medina to take on the Mustangs and fell short in a hard fought 14 - 6 contest. The defense once again kept the Griffs in the game as they forced four turnovers. Slippy had an interception in Springville's endzone to stop a Medina scoring chance and Devin Hitchcock, Alex Elkins and Pruitt all recovered fumbles for the Griffs. One of those fumble recoveries set up the lone Springville score of the game. Orndorff ran in a 1 yard touchdown to pull the Griffins within 2 points at 8 - 6 early in the fourth quarter. That was the only time the Griffins made it to the endzone. Elkins led the team on the ground and Pruitt came up with a huge fourth down reception to keep a late drive alive. Defensively, the Griffs were led by Butzer who had 11 tackles, Pruitt added 9 and Hitchcock chipped in with 8.

The boys will travel to Olean on Sept. 13 to take on the Huskies in a Thursday night game at 6 p.m.
