S-GI boys and girls track combine for eight top-five finishes at Dunkirk Invitational

SPRINGVILLE—The Springville-Griffith Institute boys and girls track teams each had four top-five finishes in the 2017 Dunkirk High School Track and Field Invitational April 28. The boys team finished 11th overall with 36 points, while the girls team finished 14th overall with 27 points in a combined field of 32 teams. Both the winners in the boys and girls division finished with 93.5 points with Hamburg capturing the boys title and Orchard Park the girls title.

Nick Abdo and Topher Elkins took the top two spots in the 400 at the Dunkirk Invitational.

The boys team dominated the 400 meter dash, placing first and second. Topher Elkins claimed the first spot with a time of 52.08 seconds, while teammate Nick Abdo finished second with a time of 52.43. Also taking a second place spot was Jared Reese in the high jump at 5-feet-6. Rounding out the boys top-five finishes was Elkins at fifth place in the 200 meter dash.

Two members of the girls team finished with team-high fourth-place finishes. Hannah Goetz was fourth in the 2,000 meter steeplechase, while Abby Steiner posted a 14-feet-8 long jump for fourth as well. Peyton Rowe finished fifth in the 400 meter hurdles, while Springville’s 4 X 800 meter relay team also finished fifth with members Nyah Solly, Elizabeth Miranda, Erin Drewiega and Goetz.

The boys team had three other finishers in the top-10. Abdo finished sixth in the 100 meter dash, while two boys relay teams took seventh and eighth. The seventh place finish came at the 4 X 100 meter relay with teammates Jackson Richert, Elkins, Abdo and Reese. The eighth place finish came in the 4 X 400 meter relay via Elkins, Abdo, Kurt Uschold and Nate Myers.

The girls team had four other top-10 finishers with two coming in the hurdles. Rowe took sixth in the 100 meter hurdles, while Goetz finished 10th in the 400 meter hurdles. Brooke Walker finished seventh in the pole vault and Miranda was ninth in the 3,000 meter run.


Springville had another six finishes in slots 11 and 12 overall in various events. For the boys, Brett Russell and Myers finished in 11th and 12th in the 3,000 meter steeplechase, respectively. For the girls team, Mackenzie Engle finished 11th in the shot put and discus. Shelby Smith was 11th in the 400 meter dash and the relay team of Solly, Miranda, Steiner and Jaime Dickinson finished 11th in the 4 X 400 meter relay.

The boys team resumes action May 5 at the Hamburg Relays with a 4:30 p.m. start, while the girls will be back competing May 6 at the Batavia Invitational starting at 2 p.m.
