BUFFALO – The Springville-Griffith Institute swimming team finished third in the Erie County Interscholastic Conference Division A Championships Feb. 2-3 at Sweet Home High School.
The Griffs collected 220.5 points and were only bested by East Aurora and Starpoint in a field of 13. Springville scored 30 or more points in four events collectively that attributed to more than half of the team’s overall points. Just missing any one of those four event-scores would have dropped Springville from third to fifth overall.
Six events produced seven top-five finishes. Two of those seven came in diving with Wyatt Fuller finishing first (428 points) and Dakota Schelble fifth (310.60 points). Outside of diving, Springville’s next best finish was Jon Boberg’s second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley (2:19.15).
Boberg was the lone Griff to record two individual top-five finishes with a fifth-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly (1:05.01) to go with his second-place IM.
Zach Hughey finished third in the 100-yard backstroke (1:03.25), while Springville also had two relay finishes in the top-five at 200 yards (medley and freestyle). The third-place freestyle team was comprised of Hughey, Boberg, Dominic Hartenstein and Elliot Emley with a time of 1:38.90. The fourth-place medley foursome included Hughey, Boberg, Emley and Blaze Schelble with a 1:53.09 time.
Blaze Schelble and Zach Hughey finished eighth and ninth, respectively in the 200 IM and with Boberg’s second-place finish scored a collective 37 points from that event – the highest total from any single event by Springville on the day. After that the divers collectively scored 34, the third-place relay team garnered 32 and the fourth-place relay team scored 30 as the top-four Griffin event totals of the two-day competition.
Springville scored points in five other events mostly through the efforts of Emley and Eric Schweickert. Emley was a top-15 finisher in two freestyle events. At 50 yards he finished 11th and at 100 yards he was 15th. Schweickert was also a two-time top-15 finisher in freestyle competition by finishing 14th at 500 yards and 15th at 200 yards. Blaze Schelble rounded out the scoring for the Griffs with a ninth-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke, while Hartenstein secured a point with a 17th place finish in the 100-yard freestyle behind Emley.
East Aurora won the event with 462.5 points and more than 80 points ahead of second-place Starpoint (379). The teams that finished behind Springville were Alden (201), Cleveland Hill (192), Iroquois (158), Maryvale (150), Eden (116), Pioneer (104), Cheektowaga (74), Tonawanda (71), Depew (69) and Lakeshore (30).
