Matt Sion joined Elle Russell as Springville’s only two student-scholar athletes to be honored twice among Section VI athletes as double winners, after the spring scholars were announced officially last weekend.
Section VI, in conjunction with The Buffalo News, recognized two types of scholar accolades. To be nominated for the team, students must have carried a 90-plus average for the previous six semesters and been a starter or significant player in their sport. The scholar-athlete team is open to seniors from Western New York's 100-plus public and private schools. The top group – referred to as winners – obtained an academic average of 93 percent or higher, while the second group obtained an academic average between 90-92 percent and were awarded the distinction of honorable mention.
Combined with his winner recognition from the winter for his participation in basketball, Sion achieved winner recognition this spring as part of the boys tennis team. Russell had already achieved the distinction as a fall and winter winner in cross country and indoor track.
Springville had one other spring winner in Wyatt Cudney, who also participated in boys tennis. An additional five other students garnered honorable mention accolades from spring Griffin sports with four of the five competing on the track and field teams and one playing softball.
Sydney Rosati was the lone softball participant, while Nick Abdo was an honorable mention for boys track. Three members of the girls track team rounded out the spring honorable mention list for the Griffins and included Lizzy Miranda, Mackenzie Engel and Russell.
Overall 124 spring winners were announced throughout Section VI, as well as 572 honorable mentions.
