Tennis team goes a perfect 25-0

SPRINGVILLE—Taking on Pioneer and Depew, the Springville tennis team recorded wins and went 25-0 in set play.

Using the pro-set format against Depew, the first competitors to reach eight wins took the individual matches. Springville won 5-0 against the Wildcats with a 40-8 edge in the combined games.

Michael Spagnola beat Michael Borodzik 8-1 in first singles. Maxx Solly bested Khaung Kyaw 8-5 in second singles and Grant Karb won at third singles by 8-2.

The first doubles pair of Connor Hughey and Matt Sion beat Jacob and Josh Rath 8-1, while doubles pair Wyatt Cudney and Scott Russell bested Anthony Kowalczyk and Matt O’Hern by the same 8-1 outcome.

On May 7, the Griffins played two matches against Pioneer and went 20-0 in set wins for a pair of 5-0 wins over the Panthers.

Springville left its roster intact as far as the various positions and appears to have settled on its first and doubles players for the rest of the season, barring injury.

Tennis

Spagnola beat Pioneer’s Aiden Addesa 6-1 and 6-0 in one match and 6-0 and 6-2 in the other. Solly won over Nate Schwartz going 6-2 and 6-0 in one match, and 6-4 and 6-2 in the other. In Pioneer’s best attempt to win a set, third singles player Bryce Schophflin took Karb to the wire in one set in each bout, before Karb emerged victorious with 7-5 and 6-4 scores in both matches.

Pioneer also took each of the Springville doubles teams to the brink. Hughey and Sion took one match with 6-3 and 7-5 set wins, and followed that with 6-2 and 6-1 set wins over Ean Kless and Alex Schenk.

Cudney and Russell bested Jacob Conrad and Zach Russell of Pioneer by 6-3 and 6-1 in one bout, and 6-1 and 7-5 in the other.

Springville starts three matches this week, having hosted Iroquois May 9. The team then takes to the road for the weekend at East Aurora, May 11 and Maryvale, May 12. Weekday matches start around 4 p.m. and the weekend match against Maryvale is slated for a 10 a.m. start.
