Paddling for a cause: Buffalo RiverWorks event to benefit veterans

BUFFALO—A paddle board and kayak event Sunday, Aug. 26 at Buffalo RiverWorks is being held to benefit veterans who are in the healing process.

The Paddle for the Troops event will run 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Aug. 26. The event includes leisurely paddling, as well as competitive and advanced races.

Funds from the event will go to the Higher Ground NY organization, which helps veterans heal through adaptive sports. Higher Ground USA has a successful 16-year history, last year the organization decided to open its third chapter in Western New York. The nonprofit organization brings a veteran with a supportive family member to Beaver Hollow for a week-long retreat to work on lifelong skills that will help the veteran heal and move forward, unlocking the issues that keep them isolated, jobless or any other reasons that keep them from living a productive, happy life.

The organization functions through fundraising so the whole program, including travel, is free to the veteran and their supportive person.

Paddle for the Troops costs $25 for an individual ticket or $80 for a four pack. Both options include lunch after participants are finished on the water.

To register, see HGNY Paddle For The Troops online or contact Kathy Weppner at 445-1066. Kayaks and paddle boards can be rented for the event. It is strongly recommended to call ahead to 342-2292 ext. 505 to reserve one now.

Buffalo RiverWorks is located at 359 Ganson St., Buffalo.
