CONCORD—A body recovered from the Cattaraugus Creek on Monday has been identified as Daniel Fitzgibbons, deputy commissioner for buildings and grounds with Erie County. His death is being investigated as a suicide, Erie County Sheriff’s spokesman Scott Zylka said.
“We are considering this as a suicide and we are investigating it as such,” Zylka said. “It’s an ongoing investigation … and a sensitive issue.”
Around 10:30 a.m., May 21, emergency officials were called to the Miller Road - Cascade Drive bridge. The body was recovered from the Cattaraugus Creek near Scoby Hill Dam. West Valley and Springville Fire Departments were on scene, along with the Erie County Sheriff’s office.
“I just want to acknowledge Erie County,” Springville Fire Chief Dave Klenk said at the May 21 Board of Trustees meeting. “[The road] to Scoby Dam was not accessible … they came with a truck full of people … and cleared out the area for us.”
Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz, on Twitter, shared his condolences to Fitzgibbons wife, parents and family.
“[Fitzgibbons] was a devoted husband to his wife Denise and a good friend to all who knew him,” Poloncarz wrote. We are all going to be a lot worse off without having [him] around. I know I will.”
